365 Project of Porter Palmer 2010

Dec 31: Beginnings

P3111

Andrew and Ashleigh's wedding was today and basically took up all day. We left the house at 10:30am and made it home just before 1:30am. Janet and Dave, along with Ashleigh's family pulled off an amazing event in a short amount of time on a tight budget. Andrew and Ashleigh are a beautiful couple with a lifetime of love in front of them. Andrew has a couple weeks of Air Force tech school before he and Ashleigh will be stationed at Warner Robbins AFB in GA. That's where Paul and Jessi live, and where Jarred plans to live later this year.
So, today may have been the end of the year, but it was a beginning for two of my favorite people.

On another note... This is the last post of this 365 day challenge. I actually stuck with a journal project for a full year!!!!

Starting tomorrow, you'll want to go to http://www.porterpalmer.com or just wait for the posts to show up on Twitter and Facebook.

Dec 30: Yuck

P3106

I prefer a white ground in the winter. This stuff looks like mud.

Dec 29: Operator Error

P3101

It's tough to admit, but Comcast made a house call because we're idiots. Sometime yesterday, our HD reception just disappeared. The channels were there, just not in HD. Bill spent quite some time chatting with customer support. They sent reset signals and finally decided to send a tech. He arrived at 4pm and had solved the problem by 4:03. It seems that in addition to the HDMI cables, a traditional cable was still attached to the TV. When I finished watching Elf for the umpteenth time yesterday, I hit input on the remote. When the TV turned on, I stopped... Not even thinking that I should keep going until HDMI was selected. In my defense, had that extra cable not been attached, the TV would not have shown up.
So, although we are sometimes quick to slam our cable company. Today I am thankful for a kind Comcast technician who didn't laugh until he was back in his van.

Dec 28: Best Bread

P3092

I bought 2 loaves of Captain John Derst's bread when we were in SC. If you've never had it and can get it, trust me it's the best. It stays fresh longer than any bread I've ever bought.
This morning, I made a batch of French toast with it for Paul, Bill, and me. Nom nom nom.

This blog will be moving on Jan 1

P3087

I've learned how to link my Posterous to my own domain http://www.porterpalmer.com

I'll be testing out some things this week and my photojournal will find a new home there on Saturday.

Dec 27: A Visit with Friends

P3077

Bill went off sledding with the family today while I stayed home to take care of a few odds and ends. About 10 minutes after he drove off in our only vehicle, long-time friends Steve and Darcy from Newberry send a message on Facebook saying they'd be in Frankenmuth in half an hour. I was crushed because I had actually thought earlier of dropping Bill off so I could keep the car, but could think of no reason I'd actually require the car.
Steve and Darcy were literally 1 exit away from Hill Rd when I called them. I begged them to stop by on the way back, and they did.
Steve and I met when I was teaching in Newberry. He's really sorta responsible for encouraging my use of technology in the classroom. He was the director of tech for our district. He talked about stuff I still don't understand. I was eager to learn and was a bit of a groupie. He actually found my first computer for me: a Compaq 386 with a 210mb hard drive!
Soon I met Darcy... One of the kindest most genuine people I have ever met. I've never heard her say an unkind word, and her smile brightens a room. She teaches, and I know she makes a difference in the lives of kids.
I simply adore these people! I'm so thankful they stopped by today. I hope when the weather warms, Bill and I will be able to go camp in SC and that they'll be able to meet us.
It's nice to get unexpected visits from old friends.

Dec 26: Snoopy

P3072

When I was a child, my coins lived (for short periods of time) in this Snoopy bank. While visiting Momma and Daddy, he brought Snoopy out of his storage building. I gave Snoopy a shower, took his photo, and prepared myself to say a permanent good-bye. Daddy had a different plan. He said that Snoopy is to go back to the storage building. There's no way he was throwing Snoopy away. Now, I won't ever be able to either!

We had a fab day today. We went to see True Grit with Mom Anderson, Paul, and Jessi-cola. Then we headed to the Wrought Iron Grill for lupper. As we were leaving, Chris and Denise pulled in to the parking lot, so Bill and I hung out with them for a bit.

Dec 25: Just a Trifle

P3067

Santa came last night! He really liked the cookies we set out for him. He brought each of us many items from our wish lists along with surprises.
After exchanging gifts, we headed to Janet's house for an amazing dinner. I was charged with bringing dessert. Well, I bought a trifle dish last yearish and have never used it. I decided to try a Christmas trifle recipe. Oh boy was it yummy!!!!!
Merry Christmas :)

Dec 24: Adventures in Baking

(download)

When I was a senior in high school, I met Elsie at her bakery. She was having trouble keeping good help on Saturdays, so I accepted the challenge. Mind you, I had no experience in the kitchen whatsoever. This became obvious to Elsie the first morning I showed up to work and proceeded to discard the doughnut holes when they came out of the cutter!
Over the years, I learned a lot about baking and cooking in general. When I go to visit Greenwood, I always enjoy meeting Elsie at the bakery. She always teaches me something. This trip, it was a peanut butter pie. I even helped a little.
Elsie remains one of my favorite people. I think I'd like to spend a week with her now that I'm an adult and could really appreciate it.
Today, I tried to make Momma's fudge. It looks mighty good!

Dec 23: Momma's Fudge

This week, Momma taught me how to make her fudge!

I have a bunch of photos from the experience.I'm happy to have been able to spend that time with my precious mother.

Don't tell her, but here's the recipe!

The visit to SC was too short, but it sure is good to be home.
